League Two Review: Ainsworth frustrated by Luton, Shrewsbury go top

Wycombe Wanderers were held to a 1-1 League Two draw by Luton Town on Friday after agreeing a new contract with manager Gareth Ainsworth.

Chairman Andrew Howard made the announcement prior to the Boxing Day clash between two of the division s high-flyers, with Ainsworth extending the two-year deal he signed in April 2013.

Wycombe looked set to mark the occasion in style when Paris Cowan-Hall opened the scoring with a header after just three minutes.

Jonathan Smith spoiled the party five minutes later, though, with a right-footed strike into the top left-hand corner from outside the penalty area.

The result saw Wycombe slip to second on goal difference, while Luton lost third place to Burton Albion.

Shrewsbury Town are the new league leaders afte…

Champions Lyon start on winning note

Seven-times reigning French league champions Lyon beat Toulouse 3-0 in their opening match of the 2008/09 campaign on Sunday to shoot to their usual spot at the top of the table.

Claude Puel took over from Alain Perrin last season and the culture of winning was maintained thanks to goals from Jean II Makoun and a double strike from Karim Benzema.

Puel, speaking on Canal Plus television, said afterwards: It s great to win by such a large margin when we are not yet 100 percent physically.

Meanwhile on Saturday, Marseille drew 4-4 in a dramatic fixture at Rennes and Paris Saint Germain fell 1-0 at Monaco as two of the nation s highest profile clubs had less-than-optimal starts to the season.

Bourdeaux, who finished as runners-up last season, started on…

Quick Report: Argentina 3-0 Brazil

The 2008 Olympic football final will be a replay of the 1996 edition, with Nigeria facing Argentina at Beijing s National Stadium. The Argentinians beat arch rivals Brazil 3-0 in the semi final on Tuesday.

No goals were scored in the first half at Workers Stadium but Argentina made the difference after the break.

Sergio Aguero broke the deadlock after 52nd minute and netted a second goal just six minutes later.

Although initially stunned by the two goals, Brazil did try to do something back but other than a goal disallowed for off-side, Dunga s men failed to threaten their opponents.

The decider came in the 76th minute when Argentina were given a chance to make it 3-0 from the penalty spot. Captain Juan Roman Riquelme stepped up and struck the ball right…

Bernstein backs Allardyce for England job

Sam Allardyce could be the man to lead the England football team to a brighter future, according to former Football Association chairman David Bernstein.

Bernstein was in charge of the FA when Roy Hodgson was appointed England manager, but admitted there remained a psychological problem within the team that prevented players from fulfilling their potential at major tournaments.

Allardyce masterminded Sunderland s successful fight against relegation from the Premier League in 2015-16 and Bernstein reckons the 61-year-old could restore some confidence to the England camp.

I m not saying we should have an English manager. But, of the English managers, I actually would go for Sam Allardyce, he said.

He s a very powerful character. I think he s got the pers…

Ujah to join Liaoning from Werder Bremen

Nigeria international Anthony Ujah has agreed to join Liaoning from Werder Bremen, the Bundesliga club have confirmed.

Bremen on Tuesday announced an undisclosed offer for the 25-year-old had been accepted and permission for the player to attend a medical had been granted.

It was not really our intention to give up Tony because he had an important role to play in our plans for next season, CEO Frank Baumann told the club s official website.

But he signalled to us a few days ago that he would like to accept the offer from China. Eventually we were able to find a mutually satisfactory solution, so we accepted his request.

Ujah, who joined Bremen on a four-year deal from Cologne in 2015, admitted the offer from Liaoning was too good to miss.

It s…

Diego Capel offered to Spurs

Tottenham have been offered a chance to sign Sporting Lisbon winger Diego Capel, .

The Lions are eager to cash in on a couple of star players in the summer in order to balance the books and they have reportedly already agreed to sell Ricky van Wolfswinkel to Norwich.

Metro has suggested that winger Diego Capel could also join a Premier League club in the summer transfer window.

The Spain international was offered to Liverpool, Swansea and Tottenham, but it appears that only Spurs are interested in doing business.

Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas desperately needs a left-sided midfielder now that Gareth Bale is no longer playing on the wing and he is keen on luring Capel to White Hart Lane.

Diego Capel, 25, arrived at Estadio Jose Alvalade in the …

Isco is a genius, says Reus

Borussia Dortmund attacker Marco Reus has praised Malaga star Isco ahead of their Champions League quarter-final tie.

The Spain international has developed into one of the most sought-after players since joining Malaga from Valencia in the summer of 2011, and his rise to prominence has not gone unnoticed in Germany.

Isco is a genius. He is a natural and a huge talent, Reus said.

The gifted forward also singled out Martin Demichelis as another key player for the La Liga side, while stressing that Malaga cannot be underestimated.

I also know Demichelis, who spent several years at Bayern Munich and has a lot of quality. Malaga have a great team that can trouble a lot of opponents, he said.

They are having a superb season, despite some internal str…

Venezuela 0-1 Peru: La Vinotinto dumped out of Copa America

Venezuela crashed out of the Copa America after they were beaten 1-0 by Peru in a forgettable final group game in Brasilia.

Starting the evening placed fifth out of five teams in Group B, Venezuela needed to better Ecuador s result against defending champions Brazil as they took on opponents whose place in the knockout stages already looked safe.

However, Jose Peseiro s Venezuela were beaten by Andre Carrillo s second-half strike while their rivals for qualification held the tournament hosts to a draw to progress instead.

And that meant an early end to a disappointing campaign for Venezuela that returned just two points from four group-stages fixtures.

An understandably tense start to proceedings featured few chances, with two Jefferson Savarino efforts f…

Genoa 2-2 Milan: Kalulu ensures Destro double in vain as Rossoneri fight back again

Pierre Kalulu s late effort saw Milan rescue a 2-2 draw for the second Serie A match running as Mattia Destro s double ultimately proved in vain for lowly Genoa.

The hosts, the last side to defeat the Rossoneri in Italy s top flight back in March, led twice as ex-Milan loanee Destro scored either side of Davide Calabria s excellent equaliser at the Luigi Ferraris.

But Kalulu tapped in from Alessio Romagnoli s downward header seven minutes from time to complete a breathless second half completely at odds with an insipid opening 45.

Leaders Milan fought back from a two-goal deficit to draw 2-2 at Parma last time out and are now 24 unbeaten in the league but only a point ahead of city rivals Inter. Genoa remain in the bottom three.

PSG tie down Marquinhos

Marquinhos has ended speculation over his future by signing a contract extension at Paris Saint-Germain that commits him to the club until 2019.

The Brazil centre-back joined PSG from Serie A side Roma in July 2013 after just a year in the Italian capital.

Marquinhos has made 31 appearances for Laurent Blanc s men this term and been widely linked with a move away from the Parc des Princes.

Premier League outfits Manchester United and Chelsea had been credited with an interest in the former Corinthians man.

But upon signing his new contract Marquinhos told the PSG s official website: This is a great success, good news. This means that the job is done.

This is a new stage in my life. The project here is beautiful and life is beautiful in Paris.
